Gerhard Merz (born July 7, 1952 in Groß-Bieberau ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and from 2008 to 2018 a member of the Hessian state parliament . Since February 2014 he has been the social policy spokesman and deputy educational policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament.

Life

Gerhard Merz attended elementary school from 1959 to 1963, from 1963 to 1971 the grammar school in Groß-Bieberau, studied from 1971 to 1974 at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and graduated with the second degree in English and political science for teaching at grammar schools State examination. He then worked as a lecturer in political education at the Administrative College of Giessen and in teacher training at the University of Giessen. From 1986 to 1990 he worked as the head of the youth education center in Wetzlar. From 1990 Merz was a research associate in the social and youth department of the city of Giessenand from 1997 to 2001 as a full-time city councilor for social affairs, youth, school and education. From 2001 to 2008 he worked as a full-time press spokesman for the SPD district of Hessen-Süd. Merz is involved in the following organizations on a voluntary basis: as chairman of the Gießen branch of the German Child Protection Association , as chairman of the Auschwitz-Freundeskreis der Auschwitzer eV, and as deputy chairman of the Ernst Ludwig Chambré Foundation.

Merz has been with the Jusos since 1977 , since 1981 in the SPD and active in local politics: from 1997 to 2009 he was a member of the district council of the Gießen district, from 2001 to 2006 he was an honorary city councilor of the university town of Gießen and since 2006 he has been a member of the Gießen city council , there since 2009 as chairman of the SPD faction. In the state elections in 2008 , 2009 and 2013 he was able to each the direct mandate as a Member of Parliament for the constituency 18 Pour I win. In the state elections in Hesse in 2018 , he no longer ran and therefore left parliament.

Merz is married and has two daughters. Merz is considered a connoisseur of Heinrich Heine's works , which he recites in readings.
