Gerhard Rost

Gerhard Rost (born January 20, 1922 in Halle (Saale) ; † May 19, 2003 in Berlin ) was Bishop of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK).

Life

After serving in the military and being a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union, Rost studied theology in Berlin and Münster from 1949. In April 1952 he passed the first and in April 1953 the second theological exam before the Examination Commission East of the Evangelical Lutheran (Old Lutheran) Church and was admitted to the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Münster in January 1961 with his thesis The Terrible and the Gracious God : PhD studies on Luther's image of God . His doctoral supervisor was Ernst Kinder .

He completed his vicariate in Berlin. In 1954 he became a lecturer in the history of the church and dogma at the Lutheran Theological College in Oberursel . In 1971 he was appointed professor.

Since autumn 1963, Rost was the executive church council of the Evangelical Lutheran (Old Lutheran) Church, from autumn 1967 president of the upper church council. In 1968 he became chairman of the working group of Free Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Germany. After the unification of the Lutheran Free Churches to form the SELK, he was elected first bishop and was appointed to his office on May 27, 1973. In 1985 he retired.

Rust was buried in Oberursel.
