Gerhard Schlitt (Librarian)

Gerhard Schlitt (born September 18, 1933 in Marburg ) is a German civil engineer, architect and former director of the University Library / Technical Information Library Hanover (UB / TIB).

Life

Gerhard Schlitt was born as the son of Karl and Emmy Schlitt, née Hansmann. He spent his youth and school days in his hometown of Marburg an der Lahn before he went to Hanover to study architecture in 1954 at what was then the Technical University (TH), where he wrote his diploma thesis in 1961 with Ernst Zinsser . Also in Hanover, Schlitt worked from 1961 to 1965 as a research assistant at the chair for the history of architecture and art, before working with Georg Hoeltje and Ernst Zinsser in 1965 with a dissertation on “The consideration and appreciation of individual buildings in German newspapers and magazines: investigations into the question in architecture criticism ”.

In the following years, until 1967, Schlitt worked initially as a librarian at the library of the TH Hannover and the technical information library, then until 1972 as a specialist for construction, architecture, spatial and regional planning as well as environmental technology, etc. at the UB / TIB.

From 1972 until his retirement in 1998, Gerhard Schlitt was director of the UB / TIB. Not least in these years he published numerous writings on the library system, with a focus on library construction, library organization and the operation of the UB / TIB. In addition, Schlitt worked in a number of local as well as regional and supraregional committees of the library and information system.

Schlitt operated the expansion of the library into a service facility for science financed jointly by the federal and state governments in accordance with the agreements on federal-state research funding.
