Politics and functions

Gerhard Schmid joined the Freedom Party in 1976 and acted as local party leader of the Freedom Party in Elixhausen from 1982 to 1984. In 2002 he was elected a member of the district party leadership of the FPÖ in Flachgau and from 2008 to 2015 he was district party representative of the FPÖ Salzburg area. Within the party, he has also been a member of the state party executive since 2005 and of the state party leadership of the FPÖ Salzburg since 2000. Schmid ran for the National Council election in 2013 and obtained a mandate from the Salzburg electoral district . He was sworn in as a member of the National Council on October 29, 2013.

Schmid said he never accepted a mandate in the Elixhausen community for professional reasons, as he drives more than 100,000 kilometers per year due to work. Schmid cites residential construction, disaster control and the reduction of living costs as his political priorities.

After serious internal party disputes and the split of the FPÖ Salzburg in June 2015, Schmid sided with Karl Schnell , who founded a new party under the name Die Freiheitlichen in Salzburg , and thus against Federal Party Chairman Heinz-Christian Strache . Schmid was then expelled from the FPÖ on June 16, 2015 by decision of the federal party executive, together with others who had sided with Schnell. At the same time, he was also excluded from the FPÖ club in the National Council, making him a member of the parliament without a club membership, a so-called wild member of parliament .

Private

Schmid is married and has two children.
