Scientific activity

Among the theological subjects, early Christian archeology found the special scientific interest of Steigerwald, which in the doctorate under the topic "The Kingship of Mary in Literature and Art of the First Six Centuries" with the renowned Christian archaeologist Johannes Kollwitz and the Catholic theologian Otto Stegmüller in May In 1967 it reached its peak for the time being at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg im Breisgau. In addition to his actual professional tasks, Steigerwald was only able to deal more intensively with early Christian archeology since 1981. At first the research of purple in early Christian art formed the focus of his work with the concluding work “Purple robes of biblical and church people as carriers of meaning in early Christian art”, which was published in 1999. Since 2001 Steigerwald has been dealing exclusively with the early Christian mosaics of S. Maria Maggiore in Rome.
