The Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium (MGG) ( colloquially also known as "ship" due to its design) is a general educational , mathematical , natural science , modern language and sports gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim in the Main-Tauber district . The school is named after the Würzburg painter and graphic artist Matthias Grünewald . The MGG has its roots in the Franziskanergymnasium, founded in 1688, one of the oldest Latin schools in Baden-Württemberg , and with a history spanning over 325 years, it is one of the oldest schools in Germany . The city of Tauberbischofsheim is responsible for the Matthias Grünewald High School.

Tauberbischofsheim has been a school location in the Benedictine monastery since the eighth century under St. Lioba von Tauberbischofsheim . The Franciscans, who would later run the grammar school, had lived in the city since 1629.

1688 to 1823

On January 9, 1688, the Elector and Archbishop of Mainz , Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, approved the establishment of a grammar school for the town of Bischofsheim under the direction of the Franciscan monastery Tauberbischofsheim and obliged the Franciscans in the newly established grammar school to teach the best syntax, poeticam and rhetoricam From today's point of view , however, the focus on the Latin language was very one-sided , which at that time was absolutely necessary as the language of the disputation at universities . The natural sciences did not become more important until the late 18th century.

The school building used at that time was located next to the Sebastianus Chapel . The immediate vicinity of the school and parsonage as well as the town church of St. Martin was considered a nuisance for many pastors at this time, as the school bell was sometimes rung in the middle of mass. In 1732 a new school building for all municipal schools was built at today's main entrance to St. Martin's Church. The Reichsdeputationshauptschluss brought great changes for the city of Tauberbischofsheim. In 1803 the city fell to the Principality of Leiningen and three years later to the Grand Duchy of Baden . The secularization that took place within the framework of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss brought deep cuts for the Franciscan order. For example, the budget of the Franciscan monastery was severely cut until it was finally dissolved in 1823, thus ending the 135-year period of the grammar school under the direction of the Franciscans.

1823 to 1954

From 1823 the rooms of the dissolved Franciscan monastery were used. In 1828 it was converted into a four-class, in 1836 into a five-class education and in 1846 by a grand ducal decree into a seven-class Progymnasium (each without a high school diploma). During the great fire on May 16, 1862, the rooms of the grammar school in the Franciscan monastery were completely destroyed. As a result, lessons had to be moved to the elementary and trade school, sometimes even to private houses. In connection with a high financial burden, the city forced itself to build a new high school for around 300 students. On January 11, 1868, the new school building below the Maria-Hilf-Chapel could be moved into. In 1871 the new grammar school building of the archbishopric boys' convent was inaugurated. The next goal was to obtain the status of a nine-class full high school, because with a decree of 1872 the Tauberbischofsheimer Schule, as a seven-class scholarly school, was only allowed to call itself a "Progymnasium".

A few attempts to become a nine-grade full institution again failed until a nine-grade, ancient-language grammar school with Abitur was approved in 1882. In 1884 the first 19 high school graduates left the grammar school. The Archbishop's Gymnasialkonvikt moved into a new building at the foot of the Stammberg in 1891 with a dormitory or boarding school for foreign students and a house chapel .

The gymnasium's new gymnasium was inaugurated as early as 1903. During the Nazi period from 1937 onwards, the school was renamed Frankenschule - Oberschule für Jungs , with the schooling shortened to eight years. In March 1945 the American military administration temporarily closed the school, the reopening took place in October 1945 as the Realgymnasium Tauberbischofsheim with a high school branch. The high school branch was oriented towards the old language. In addition, a new language branch was installed in 1952.

1954 to 2000

In 1954 the school was given its current name Matthias Grünewald Gymnasium . New buildings between 1958 and 1970 led to new school buildings, and the new sports hall followed in 1983. In 1963, the mathematics and natural sciences branch was established as the third training course. In 1995 the grammar school became the partner school of the Olympic fencing center , and in 1998 it became an elite sports school . In the same year, the three profiles that have been in effect since then (language profile, scientific profile, sport profile) were set up.

After 2000

Since 2004 the school is eight years old (G8). In 2006 the open all-day school with kitchen, cafeteria, internet café and games library was set up. In 2009, the MGG celebrated 125 years of Abitur. A new library was opened in 2012 and the renovation of the science rooms was completed. In 2013 the MGG celebrated its 325th anniversary with the keynote speaker and former student Archbishop Robert Zollitsch .

School life

Foreign languages ​​and profile directions

From the fifth grade onwards, English is compulsory as the first foreign language. For the sixth grade it is compulsory to choose between French or Latin.

With the eighth grade, either the scientific profile (additionally with NwT ), the sports profile or the language profile ( additionally with Spanish or French as a third foreign language) is binding.

Electives and study groups

A string class, choir, orchestra, big band, vocal ensemble and theater are also offered as elective courses. Working groups on the topics of the Internet, climbing, model making, chess, basketball and others complete the offer.

School competitions

MGG has been involved in the regional inventor competition Creative Minds since 2007.

Elite school of sport

The grammar school has been a partner school of the fencing Olympic base since 1995 . In 2009, the MGG received the title Elite School of Sports from the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) together with four other partner schools in Tauberbischofsheim ( industrial school and commercial school Tauberbischofsheim at the vocational school center, as well as the Riemenschneider secondary school and Pestalozzi secondary school at the school center at Wörth) . This is a network of the state schools in Tauberbischofsheim, the Tauberbischofsheim Olympic training center and the full and partial boarding school of the Tauberbischofsheim fencing club .
