Hanns Jana

Hanns Jana (born July 18, 1952 in Tauberbischofsheim ) is a former German fencer who won an Olympic silver medal with the Degen team in 1976 for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Life

In 1971 Jana graduated from the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim . He fought for the Tauberbischofsheim fencing club .

successes

In 1975 Jana surprisingly won the world ranking tournament Monal in Paris. He was then nominated as a substitute for the German team at the Fencing World Championships in Budapest in 1975 , but was not used. In 1976 Jana finished sixth at the Monal and placed fourth at the German championship . After Alexander Pusch , Jürgen Hehn , Reinhold Behr and Volker Fischer , he was the fifth man in the German epee team at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He was only used in the preliminary round match against Austria, with 2-2 battles he helped in the 10-6 victory. In the Olympic final his teammates lost to the Swedes, but won the first ever Olympic medal by a German epee team.

For this success he received - together with the sword team - the silver bay leaf.

At the fencing world championships in Melbourne in 1979 , Hanns Jana fought with the German team in the final against the Soviet Union; Alexander Pusch, Elmar Borrmann , Christian Adrians and Jana won the silver medal. In 1980 these four fencers and Manfred Beckmann were on the line-up for the 1980 Olympic Games, but did not take part because of the Olympic boycott .
