Sand Skiing (including sand skiing or sand-skiing ; in German and sand skiing ) is an extreme sport similar to skiing but found on sand instead.

This board sport has a growing following around the world, but is particularly common in desert areas such as Namibia , the United States, and the United Arab Emirates . It is operated in the form of downhill , cross-country skiing and telemark skiing . In Namibia this sport is mainly practiced in a dune area between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay . As it is a national park , the world's highest dunes in Sossusvlei can only be driven with a special permit.

There are international competitions in sand skiing. The international European sand skiing championship has been taking place regularly in Hirschau on Monte Kaolino in Upper Palatinate since 2007 .

On May 31, 2010, Henrik May set the speed record in sand skiing in Namibia with 92.12 km / h and recorded it in the Guinness Book of Records .

Another variant of sand skiing is sand boarding .
