Leopold Löwenstein ( December 1, 1843 in Gailingen am Hochrhein - December 16, 1923 in Mosbach ) was a rabbi , historian and author .

Leopold Löwenstein was the son of Rabbi Jakob Löwenstein (born on August 17, 1799 in Bruchsal ; died on July 27, 1869 in Tauberbischofsheim ) and Regina nee Ettlinger (born 1806 in Karlsruhe ; died 1880). He grew up with twelve siblings. At the time of his birth, his father was a district rabbi in Gailingen. Leopold Löwenstein married Sophie nee Weihermann in 1873 (born 1849 in Feuchtwangen ; died 1921 in Mosbach). There were nine children from this marriage: Myriam (born July 24, 1874), Jakob (born March 28, 1876; died February 12, 1878), Betty (born July 14, 1877), Jakob (born January 20 1879; died April 6, 1925), Joseph (born March 19, 1881; died September 3, 1894), Max (born January 14, 1884; fallen 1915), Regina (born December 30, 1885), Joel (born July 8, 1887; died 1964) and Alfred (born April 5, 1894).

education

He attended the Matthias-Grünewald-Gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim and then the Lyceum in Karlsruhe . From 1862 to 1865 he studied the following subjects at the University of Würzburg : Modern History, Philosophy, History of Literature and Education. At the same time he attended the Talmud school of the orthodox rabbi Seligmann Bär Bamberger . He was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

Professional background

In 1865 he became a teacher at the Israelite school in Eisenstadt in Burgenland and at the same time was a student of Rabbi Esriel Hildesheimer's yeshiva . In 1866/67 he was a teacher at the higher Israelite school in Hamburg and from 1868 to 1870 a teacher in Güstrow . After Leopold Löwenstein was a teacher in Tauberbischofsheim in 1871/72, he accepted the position of rabbi in his birthplace Gailingen in 1872. From 1886 until his death he was district rabbi for the district rabbinates of Mosbach , Merchingen and Wertheim . Before 1907 he worked part-time for the editorial team of the Jewish weekly newspaper Der Israelit . From 1920 until his death he was a conference rabbi , that is, a member of the religious conference in the Upper Council of the Israelites of Baden .

Leopold Löwenstein died on December 16, 1923 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Mosbach .
