Budapest marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Budapest Marathon (official name Spar Budapest International Marathon after the sponsor Spar ) is a marathon that has been taking place in Budapest since 1984 and is one of the most popular in Europe. The program also includes a four- person Ekiden marathon relay . There is also a 30 km run that starts at 12.195 km of the marathon route, as well as runs over 7 km (mini marathon), 2.7 km (fun run) and 600 m (family run).

history

Since 1961, annual marathons have been held in Budapest in autumn, but they were only open to elite runners. In 1984 the current event was therefore launched with the sponsor IBUSZ , which was also aimed at amateur athletes. The following year the city center was successfully included in the course, and in 1987 the Budapest Marathon became the first Eastern European event to become a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). While the fall marathon was discontinued after 1990, the new event continued to flourish, but ran into financial difficulties after Mars replaced IBUSZ as title sponsor in 1993 , so it paused in 1994 and 1995. With Kaiser's-Plus as a new sponsor, the run was continued in 1996, from now on with an autumn event. In 1998 the Hungarian championship was integrated into the race for the first time. With the takeover of the Hungarian plus stores by Spar Österreichische Warenhandels-AG in 2008, the official name of the event changed.

route

The start is on Heldenplatz . First it goes on the Andrássy út in the city center of Pest . After having passed the Opera and St. Stephen's Basilica , you reach the Danube at the height of the Elisabeth Bridge . Now the Danube is followed upstream, past the Hungarian Academy of Sciences the shoes beside the River Danube and the Parliament building to Margaret Bridge . Via this one changes to the Margaret Island , which one traverses in its length and leaves again via the Árpád Bridge . Downstream you get back on the left bank of the Danube to Margaret Bridge , walk the previously passed section in the opposite direction and change further south on the Petőfi Bridge to the right bank of the Danube to Buda . A turning point stretch of approx. Five kilometers, which leads mainly to the south, is completed before returning over the Petőfi Bridge to the Pest side and again along the Danube to the level of the Margaret Bridge. After another U-turn, turn west at the parliament building. The course now describes an arc that leads past the Westbahnhof and approaches the start area from the northwest. One and a half kilometers from the finish, the route turns off at the Szépművészeti Múzeum into the city park , where the finish is on the Olof-Palme-Promenade not far from the time wheel .
