The Petőfi Bridge ( Petőfi híd in Hungarian ) is one of the nine road bridges across the Danube in Hungary's capital Budapest .
It connects the two districts of Pest and Buda . It has been named after the Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi since it reopened in 1952 .
The bridge is a haunched half-timbered structure and has a span between the two pillars of 154 meters and a total length of 378 meters. With approach bridges over the riverside streets, the total length increases to 514 meters.
Originally known as the Miklós Horthy Bridge , it was built in 1933–1937 according to the plans of Hubert Pál Álgyay . After it was destroyed in the Second World War on January 15, 1945, it was replaced by today's Petőfi Bridge and reopened in 1952.
