The Kossuth Bridge ( Hungarian : Kossuth híd ) was a bridge over the Danube in Budapest .

At the end of the Second World War , in 1945, the seven bridges over the Danube in Budapest that had existed up to that point were destroyed by explosions. A pontoon bridge was built over the 290 meter wide river for military purposes . However, this turned out to be unsuitable in winter due to ice floes in the Danube, which is why a solid structure was necessary.

For the construction of the Kossuth Bridge, among other things, pipelines were dismantled from the oil wells in Zala County . 15 workers were killed during construction by the Red Army . Until the rest of the bridges were rebuilt (from around 1960), the bridge named after the Hungarian revolutionary leader Lajos Kossuth was the only connection between Buda and Pest. Heavy trucks could only drive over the bridge individually in one direction at a maximum of 20 km / h.

When the destroyed Danube bridges were finally rebuilt, structural damage was found on the Kossuth Bridge. The provisional was dismantled in 1960 and not replaced. The city administration later installed memorial plaques on both banks of the river at the height of the former bridgeheads.
