Jakob-Koppel Löwenstein ( August 17, 1799 in Bruchsal - July 27, 1869 in Tauberbischofsheim ) was an author and district rabbi in Baden .

Jakob Löwenstein was the son of Joseph Löwenstein. He studied at the yeshiva in Bruchsal near Pelta Epstein, from 1813 in Karlsruhe with Ascher Löw and Aron Ettlinger, from 1816 in Mainz with Herz Scheuer, from 1820 in Hanau with Moses Sontheim, in 1825 in Würzburg with Abraham Bing . In 1825 and 1826 he was matriculated at the University of Würzburg .

Löwenstein married Regina (Rechel) nee Ettlinger (born 1806 in Karlsruhe ; died 1880 in unknown) in 1829 . From this marriage there were thirteen children, eleven of whom were born in Gailingen am Hochrhein : Adelheid (born on May 26, 1830), Hannchen (born on May 24, 1831), Minette (born on August 20, 1832; died on April 10, 1835), Isaac (born on October 5, 1834), Rebekka (born on April 16, 1836), Samuel (born on January 17, 1838), Babette (born on December 29, 1839), Mirjam (born on December 31, 1841), Leopold (1843–1923), Judith (born September 16, 1845) and Joseph (born December 29, 1847).

Professional background

Jakob Löwenstein was matriculated at the University of Würzburg in 1825 and 1826 . In 1825 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1829 he was rabbi in Gailingen, where he gave the address as district rabbi for the inauguration of the new synagogue on September 9, 1836 . After all, from 1852 until his death he was the district rabbi in Tauberbischofsheim, where he also directed a yeshiva for high school students. In the years 1857–58 and 1859–61 he simultaneously administered the Merchingen rabbinate .

He was neo-orthodox . His work Menoah tehorah or Pure Judaism ... is considered to be the first orthodox pamphlet in German. He corresponded with the "miracle rabbi of Michelstadt" Seckel Löb Wormser .
