Gerhard Steines

Gerhard Steines (also: Gerd Steines ; born August 17, 1947 ) is a former German shot putter and journalist .

Athletic career

At the European Athletics Indoor Championships he was eighth in San Sebastián in 1977 and fifth in Milan in 1978 .

In 1976 he was German champion, in 1973 runner-up. In the hall he became German champion in 1974, 1978 and 1979 and vice-champion in 1977.

Gerhard Steines initially started for TV 1847 Wetzlar, from 1974 to 1978 for TV Wattenscheid, 1979 for LG Frankfurt and finally for TSG Gießen-Wieseck (1980/81).

In 1986 he admitted in a newspaper article that he had been taking doping substances continuously from 1970 onwards . He sharply criticized sports officials and associations who “- all according to official statements, the most severe condemnants of anabolic steroids - issue funding and nomination criteria that they consider unattainable even without taking anabolic steroids”.

Journalistic activity

Gerhard Steines studied sport and German literature . Until September 2012 he was a member of the editor-in-chief of Gießener Allgemeine Zeitung , Alsfelder Allgemeine Zeitung and Wetterauer Zeitung. In retirement, he continues to write under the abbreviation gw in the sports column “Kickoff”. Steines is also the author of the self-deprecating gloss "My progressive old day" in the "Seniorenjournal" of the Gießener Allgemeine Zeitung. All of his columns are archived on the Internet as part of the “Sport, God & the World” blog.
