Gerhard Weber (photographer, Rostock)

Gerhard Weber (born December 17, 1948 in Rostock ) is a German photographer . Weber became known mainly for his mostly black and white street photos from his hometown Rostock. In 1994 he received the Hanseatic City of Rostock's Culture Prize for his photography .

Life

Weber's interest in art was aroused, among other things, by taking drawing lessons at the Rostock Conservatory. Weber learned the profession of dental technician, but gave it up after 15 years to devote himself to art. He taught drawing at the technical school for applied arts in Heiligendamm . In 1982 he destroyed his drawings and paintings and concentrated on photography. His photo archive, which dates back to 1963, is considered to be one of the most extensive in the Hanseatic City of Rostock (focus: architecture and urban development, industrial buildings, culture and everyday life in Rostock and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania).

Since 1966 he has published articles in the North German Latest News on a regular basis . Between 1974 and 1983 he gave regular lectures in the Kulturbund of the GDR . He designed a traveling exhibition with 70 graphics by Oskar Kokoschka , which was also shown in Dresden, Berlin, Halle and Schwerin. Between 1987 and 1991 he gave lectures in the Rostock Kunsthalle on photographers of the 20th century, such as Henri Cartier-Bresson , Jacques-Henri Lartigue , and Gisèle Freund .

Since 1987 exhibitions of his photographs have been shown in Rostock, Boizenburg, Lübeck and Berlin. In 1989 he became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . In the years 1992–1994 he documented the reconstruction of the tower of the Petrikirche in Rostock . In 1993 he received a work grant from the nationwide Kulturfonds foundation . In 1997 he received a work grant from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. On April 8, 2016, he was honored by the Kempowski Archive Rostock for his services with the Kempowski Medal of the Hanseatic City of Rostock.

Parts of his work are owned by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Foto eV, the art service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , the DG Bank in Frankfurt am Main and the Fotomuseum in Winterthur .
