Gerhardt Müller-Goldboom (* 1953 in London ) is a German musician, conductor and composer.

Life

Müller-Goldboom studied composition with Frank Michael Beyer and double bass with Rainer Zepperitz at the Berlin University of Music (today: University of the Arts ) from 1972 to 1976 . From 1972 to 1979 he studied musicology at the Free University of Berlin with Rudolf Stephan , Hellmut Kühn, Tibor Kneif and Frieder Zaminer . From 1977 to 1980 he was a scholarship holder of the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic . As a double bass player he played a. a. in the Berlin “ensemble quodlibet” and was a member of the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin from 1981 to 2018 .

In 1988 Müller-Goldboom received a composition grant from the Berlin Senate, and in 1990 the Olevano grant from the Berlin Academy of the Arts . The Electroacoustic Studio of the Academy enabled a research project on the perception of microintervals from 1996–98. At the invitation of André Richard , he was able to work at the SWR Experimental Studio in Freiburg in 2000 with a grant from the Heinrich Strobel Foundation . In 2003 Müller-Goldboom was composer in residence at the Brandenburg Summer Concerts .

His compositions include solo works, chamber music, orchestral pieces and electronic realizations. They were performed at concerts and festivals of new music in Germany (including the European Workshop of Contemporary Music Dresden 1999, “Ultrasound” 2000, “open systems” Bochum 2005, “ MaerzMusik ” 2006, “Intersonanzen” Potsdam 2010, ZERO Festival Berlin 2015), Italy ("Rassegna di nuova musica" Macerata 1988, "Festival Internationale di Musica Contemporanea" Acqui Terme 2014), France ("Rostrum of Composers" Paris 1992), in the Netherlands ("November Music" z'Hertogenbosch 2005), Switzerland ( “Zurich Days for New Music” 1990), the USA (portrait concert “Experimental Intermedia Festival” New York 2007) and in Japan (portrait concert AKO-Studio Tokyo 2015). He is currently working on a musical theater piece based on Ovid'sMetamorphoses ”.

In 1987 Müller-Goldboom co-founded the ensemble “work in progress - Berlin”, of which he has been conductor and artistic director ever since. Under his programmatic responsibility, the ensemble played a series of concerts in the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1991–97 . The ensemble's international concert activities resulted in guest conductors at a festival of new music at the Budapest Philharmonic and at concerts with the “Ensemble of the 21st Century” in Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv, which have continued since then with renowned formations and at important venues. In 2001 he conducted the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin with a CD recording of works by Astor Piazzolla and with the world premiere of the “Sinfonia No. 1 'Colombia' ”(1925) by Julián Carrillo . He received impulses for the performance of early music (especially Rameau's ) from Marc Minkowski in Paris in 2002 . There has been a collaboration with the Forum for Contemporary Music Leipzig since 2011, and with the Collegium Novum Zurich since 2012 .

Müller-Goldboom gained conducting experience in the field of music theater as an assistant to Kent Nagano ( Wagner's “Parsifal” in Baden-Baden, Takemitsu's “My Way of Life” in Berlin, Paris and Tokyo). Since 2003 he has directed several music theater productions in the Konzerthaus Berlin , a. a. with Mauricio Kagel's “mare nostrum” (performances also in Huddersfield 2003 and Athens 2005) as well as with three works by Sylvano Bussotti , “La Passion selon Sade” (2005) as well as “Silvano Sylvano” and “Pièces de chair II” in a staged performance (2008). For Sasha Waltz 's production of Dusapin's “Medea” he was in charge of the choir and realized the sound direction (Grand Théâtre Luxembourg 2007, performances in Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Melbourne). In 2010 he was responsible for the performances and CD recording of Mark Andre's opera “… 22,13…” at the Berlin Radialsystem, followed in 2013 by Henri Pousseur's “Votre Faust” there and at the Basel Theater .
