Tiburtius "Tibor" Kneif (born October 9, 1932 in Bratislava , † July 26, 2016 in Berlin ) was a German-Hungarian lawyer and musicologist .

Life

Kneif, who received his doctorate at the Faculty of Law in Budapest after studying law in 1955, continued his studies at the Faculty of Law in Göttingen after his emigration to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1956, but from 1959 turned to the subjects of musicology, philosophy and Romance studies and received his doctorate again in 1963, this time with the musicological topic on the emergence of musical medieval studies with Heinrich Husmann . With a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) he worked from 1965 to 1967 at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research with Theodor W. Adorno . In 1971 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin in musicology with Rudolf Stephan and was appointed professor here in 1973 (1997: University professor a. D.). In addition to his academic career, he was also active as a music critic, for example for the Göttinger Presse between 1959 and 1963 and for the Berliner Tagesspiegel from 1976 to 1984 .
