history
Emergence

The listed building of today's Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium, built in neo-Gothic style with red clinker facing, was built from 1903 to 1905 as a "boys' school" as part of a comprehensive renovation of the urban school infrastructure according to the plans of the Wismar architect Johann Busch on Dahlmannstrasse. After school operations began in 1905, it was divided into seven classes. In 1908, 922 students attended the teaching facility.
Weimar Republic
The post-war turmoil also spread to the schools in Mecklenburg-Schwerin. On May 17, 1920, the state constitution stipulated compulsory schooling, which also set fixed framework conditions for the boys' college.
Third Reich
With the beginning of the Second World War , the tasks of the elementary and middle schools changed. New curricula were introduced. In April 1942, as a result of a major night attack on the city of Wismar by Royal Air Force planes with several close hits to the building, the school conditions were so catastrophic that regular school operations could no longer be guaranteed. As the war progressed, the boys' elementary school was set up as an auxiliary hospital.
post war period
After the war, school operations began again; at the end of the 1948/49 school year, uniform final exams were held for the first time in all primary schools in Wismar. The names of the schools in the city center of Wismar were changed in 1949, so that the boys' primary school became the Gerhart Hauptmann School . Since the early 1960s, the POS concept anchored in the education system of the GDR was also introduced in Wismar and the school was called POS Gerhart Hauptmann .
Since 1992, the teaching facility is the university secondary school of secondary education sector and thus beside Big City School Gymnasium the second educational institution in the Hanseatic city of Wismar.
At the beginning of December 2015, the school building was classified as urgently in need of renovation and extensive renovations were considered. For this purpose, the building must be drawn completely empty. The construction costs are estimated at more than 10 million euros.
