Gerhart Hetzel

Gerhart Hetzel also Gerhard Hetzel (born April 24, 1940 in Neu-Werbaß ; † July 29, 1992 in Salzburg ) was a violinist , concertmaster of the Vienna State Opera and first concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic .

He began his first training at the age of five. He initially continued his studies in Magdeburg with the 1st concertmaster of the municipal orchestra Otto Kobin . With this he played the double concerto for 2 violins in D minor BWV 1043 by JS Bach in public in 1950. At the age of 13 he came to Waldshut with his parents and received further training in Lucerne with Rudolf Baumgartner and Wolfgang Schneiderhan .

From 1956 to 1960 he worked for the Festival Strings Lucerne , where he took part in Schneiderhan's master classes from 1959 to 1970 as an assistant; From 1963 he was concertmaster of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra , before he was appointed concertmaster of the Vienna State Opera on September 1, 1969 and was accepted into the Vienna Philharmonic Association on the same date.

In 1972 he was appointed first concertmaster of the orchestra. He taught at the University of Music in Munich from 1968 to 1986 and at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1986 to 1992. He had an accident while hiking in the mountains during the Salzburg Festival and soon succumbed to serious injuries.
