Germain Louis de Chauvelin, marquis de Groisbois (* 1685 ; † 1762 ) was a French minister of state , state secretary for foreign affairs from 1727 to 1737 and keeper of the seal .

Live and act

As State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Germain Louis de Chauvelin pursued a policy directed against Austria. He was one of the leading supporters of France's declaration of war on Austria in 1733 ( War of the Polish Succession ) due to the tensions surrounding the Polish succession. In the Vienna Preliminary Peace of 1735 (see Peace of Vienna (1738) ), France had to accept the succession to the throne of Friedrich August II , the French candidate and father-in-law of Louis XV. However, Stanislaus Leszczyński received the Duchy of Lorraine , which had to fall to France in the long term. In 1736, after the marriage of the emperor's daughter Maria Theresa with Franz Stephan von Lothringen , Chauvelin said that a union of Lorraine with the imperial rule should not be accepted. On September 30th of this year Stanislaus Leszczyński was persuaded by Chauvelin and Cardinal Fleury to leave the financial management and administration of the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar to the French state. In return, he received cash payments from the French crown. The regulations of the Vienna Peace came into effect in 1738.
