Gernot Graefe

Gernot Graefe (* 1937 in Wesermünde ; † January 1994 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian ecologist and environmentalist.

Life

Graefe grew up near Frankfurt am Main and studied zoology in Frankfurt, Munich and Seewiesen (with Konrad Lorenz ) and from 1961 in Vienna (with Wilhelm Kühnelt ).

Graefe then initially worked as a behavioral researcher with Otto Koenig in his research community Wilhelminenberg - now the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Ethology of the OeAW - and in Koenig's branch in Rust (Burgenland) on Lake Neusiedl. Among other things, he did research on anemonefish ( Amphiprion ) and examined their breeding and youth development and later also carried out field studies. He then worked for almost three years at the Hoechst paint factory and in 1966 went to Argentina as a parasitologist for two years, where he worked on cercariae . Furthermore, he dealt with viruses, insect ecology (his specialty here were the neuroptera ) and other topics.

He then worked again at Otto Koenig (in the Donnerskirchen Ecosystem Research Department of the Institute for Comparative Behavioral Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences; later, the ÖAW Research Center for Bioenergy under his leadership) and dealt with the possibilities of generating energy from renewable raw materials. In Austria he was one of the first to publicly reject “nuclear power”, for example with broadcasts on ORF (1971-74). From 1972 Graefe propagated organic farming on ORF .

In particular, he became known for his research into energy production from Burgenland grape marc . Graefe was the holder of a patent for mixing the pomace residues with rock flour (as a buffer) for use as a plant fertilizer. He also came into contact with peripheral areas of the natural sciences, for example with water revitalization or " homeopathy " for forest trees damaged by acid rain using rock flour, for example gneiss. This caused a stir in the US and Australia. Graefe also dealt with biotope rehabilitation using the resonance starter method.

He taught ecology at the Pedagogical Academy in Vienna. From 1969 he was a lecturer, later a lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna, for example with the remarkable lecture topic "Behavioral research for architects" (again esoteric references, for example to bioresonance or the "radiation-repellent cathedral house" (Planet Earth is supposed to be about force meridians like the human body according to acupuncture theory )) .- He was married to the folklorist Iris Barbara Graefe, who had previously also been Otto Koenig's employee at the "Biological Station Wilhelminenberg".

Graefe has been a well-known scientist since his pomace studies, especially in a wine-growing country : this is evidenced, for example, by the fact that in the 1980s a folder with offprints of his publications was in the magazine reading room of the Vienna University Library. He died of a serious illness, not yet 57 years old.
