Gerold Adam (* 1933 in Wolmirstedt ; † 1996 in Konstanz ) was a German biophysicist .

Live and act

Gerold Adam attended the Adolf Reichwein School in Halle an der Saale and passed his Abitur in West Berlin in 1950 . He did not finish an electrical apprenticeship he had started, but began studying physics, mathematics and physical chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen in 1951 . In 1958 he made his diploma in physics and started a doctoral thesis at E. Jenckel. After his death, he moved to the Institute of Polymers of the University of Marburg and was in 1961 at FH Müller with a thesis on the theory of volume relaxation of amorphous high polymers Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1961 he went to the USA, first to JH Gibbs at Brown University , later to Max Delbrück in Pasadena . The physicist and physical chemist became a biophysicist.

After returning to Germany, he worked for M. Klingenberg in Munich. At the suggestion of Peter Läuger , he found his way to the University of Konstanz in 1969 . After his habilitation in the same year, he was first appointed university lecturer and later professor.

Together with Peter Läuger and Günther Stark, he was the author of the standard work for teaching physical chemistry and biophysics , Adam, Laeuger, Stark for short .

Although he was more a theorist by nature, Gerold Adam has led an experimental working group since the 1970s, which mainly dealt with questions of cell proliferation, cell differentiation and cellular aging. The question of the origin of old age death in evolution was also a philosophically significant question for him.
