The Gerrei is one of the 23 historic Sardinian regions. It is located in the southeast of the island and is characterized by a series of plateaus, deep valleys and the course of the Flumendosa river . In the lush Mediterranean maquis, numerous springs arise between cork and holm oaks and olive trees . Some important archaeological sites are in the area:

In Armungia, the memory of rural civilization is kept alive in the ethnographic collection of the S'omu de ainas (House of Utensils) museum. The writer and politician Emilio Lussu was born here.

The city of San Nicolò Gerrei has its origins in Punic-Roman times. A sculpture by Giovanni Campus stands in Piazza Lussu, while one by Pinuccio Sciola is in Piazza Naitza. Campus and Sciola are protagonists of contemporary art on an international level.
