Gerrit Bekker

Gerrit Michalis Bekker (born October 23, 1943 in Hamburg ) is a German painter and writer.

Life

Gerrit Bekker is the son of a Greek mother and a German father. He spent part of his youth in Greece with his mother. In 1960 he returned to Hamburg alone and began a commercial apprenticeship. In 1962 he moved to Rendsburg. From 1965 to 1968 he studied at the Muthesius University of Applied Sciences in Kiel with Gottfried Brockmann and Martin Domke. He married in 1966. His daughter was born in the same year. In 1970 he went hiking. From 1971 to 1975 he made extensive sailing trips in Schleswig-Holstein and Scandinavian waters. His work as a writer began in 1982 with the volume of poetry "Wax Wing's Fear". The poem "Dichter" contained in this volume was included in the 25th year book of poetry with the most beautiful poems from 25 years.

In the same year Gerrit Bekker received the Hebbel Prize from the Friedrich Hebbel Foundation . In 1984 he was awarded the advancement award of the Schleswig-Holstein State Art Prize. He was recognized for his artistic work in the 1980s and 1990s through working grants from the German Literature Fund and from the states of Berlin and Schleswig-Holstein. From 1985 to 1986 Gerrit Bekker was writer in residence in New York. In 1994 he received the Mara Cassens Prize for his novel “Color of Shadows” , the most highly endowed literary prize for a German first novel. He has had a studio in Berlin since 1995. In 1996 he moved from Rendsburg to Lindewitt. Today he lives alternately in Lindewitt and Berlin. In 2014, friends and collectors of Gerrit Bekkers founded the Gerrit Bekker Society to make his work permanently accessible to the public and research.
