Corver was born as the son of the married couple Nicolaas Corver (1661–1692) and Agneta Hasselaer . He came from the 18th century patrician family Corver and was the grandson of the regent Joan Corver . Since his father died a year after his birth, his mother and her second husband Gerbrand Pancras took care of the young Gerrit Corver. Thanks to his grandfather, the young aristocrat had a good name among the high statesmen and diplomats of the republic. He was appointed city commissioner at the age of 16. His appointment to Schepen took place in 1716. Other offices were that of a colonel in the civic guard (1719), a councilor in the Raad van State (1721) and in 1731 for the first time the mayor of Amsterdam, which he held nine more times. In contrast to the rulers of the 18th century, Corver was not affected by corruption and therefore did not play a role in the official bargaining. In 1738 he was appointed director of the Suriname Society , a position he held until 1750.

Gerrit Corver was married to Margaretha Munter . From this marriage came Maria Margaretha Corver, who first married Jan Hooft (1719–1744) and later with Nicolaes Geelvinck . The son Gerrit Corver Hooft came from Maria Margaretha's first marriage. He founded the family of Corver Hooft and was the father of Jan Corver Hooft .

In 1748 Gerrit Corver was removed from the government by the new heir William IV of Nassau-Orange and the Orange -minded statesman Mattheus Lestevenon, regardless of his qualitative and open manner of government.
