Protacio Gungon

Protacio G. Gungon (born June 19, 1925 in Santa Maria ; † April 26, 2014 ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Antipolo .

Life

Protacio Gungon studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila (1946–1952) and sociology at Fordham University in New York City (1955–1957). He was ordained a priest on March 29, 1952 and served in the Archdiocese of Manila . From 1978 to 1980 he was the principal of the San Carlos Seminary .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 8, 1977 auxiliary bishop in Manila and titular bishop of Obba . The Apostolic Nuncio of the Philippines , Bruno Torpigliani , donated him episcopal ordination on August 24 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Amado Paulino y Hernandez , Auxiliary Bishop in Manila, Oscar V. Cruz , Auxiliary Bishop in Manila, Ricardo Jamin Vidal , Archbishop of Lipa , and Pedro Bantigue y Natividad , Bishop of San Pablo .

On January 24, 1983, he was appointed the first bishop of Antipolo by Pope John Paul II . In 1993 he carried out the first diocesan synod. He was chairman of the Episcopal Commission for the Clergy and a member of the Episcopal Commission for National Social Action of the Philippine Bishops' Conference.

On October 18, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
