history

The company was originally founded on April 24, 1847 as a confectionery in Vienna by Anton and Barbara Gerstner. At the Paris World's Fair in 1867 , the confectionery was awarded a gold and bronze medal. Two years later, Gerstner took over the catering in the kuk Hofoperntheater, today's Vienna State Opera , which has remained so to this day. As part of the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 , Gerstner was the first catering company in Austria. At the same world exhibition, the company also received a gold medal for its exhibits. In recognition of the achievements for the world exhibition, the company was then appointed kuk Hofzuckerbäcker.

In the years that followed, Gerstner was responsible for catering at numerous historical events. For example, on October 21, 1911, Gerstner hosted the wedding dinner for Princess Zita von Bourbon-Parma and Archduke Karl and looked after the buffet on the occasion of the signing of the Austrian State Treaty on May 15, 1955, as well as the subsequent gala dinner in Schönbrunn Palace .

In 1988 the company received the state award which entitles it to use the Austrian national coat of arms. In 1989 Gerstner was also entrusted with the culinary supervision in the Kunsthistorisches Museum , where in 1994 the "Gerstner Art and Enjoyment Evening Buffets" and 2003 the "Gerstner Art Brunch" were introduced, which have been taking place since 2011 in the Gerstner Beletage in Palais Todesco . The company experienced a change in the ownership structure in 1995 when a private investor group acquired the majority of the shares in Gerstner. In the same year the production facility was relocated to Simmeringer Hauptstrasse. In 2003, the company also took over the catering for the Wiener Musikverein , in 2004 for specialist and public fairs, banquets, congresses and other events in the new Exhibition and Congress Center in Vienna and finally in 2012 Gerstner became the catering partner of the Congress and Event Center in the Vienna Hofburg . The entry into the hotel industry took place in 2013 with the acquisition of the Austria Hotels International Group, through which the Gerstner Imperial Hospitality Group now operates ten hotels.
