Gert Sabidussi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gert Otto Sabidussi (born October 28, 1929 in Graz- Waltendorf) is an Austrian-Canadian mathematician who deals with graph theory and algebraic combinatorics .

biography

Sabidussi went to school in Innsbruck and Vienna and studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1952 under Edmund Hlawka (About a class of matrices whose elements are zero or one). The dissertation was about the unambiguous embedding of graphs in areas and about graph automorphisms. But the results had already been proven by others, as he soon found out. In Vienna he also heard from Felix Ehrenhaft , Johann Radon , Hans Thirring and Nikolaus Hofreiter . As a post-doctoral student , he was at the Institute for Advanced Study (1955/56) and Princeton University. He then went to the University of Minnesota (Instructor) and Tulane University . From 1960 he was a professor at McMaster University and from 1969 at the University of Montreal . In 1970/71 he headed CRM in Montreal.

In 1968 he was visiting professor in Cologne and Vienna. After the end of the Prague Spring, many Czechoslovak mathematicians came to the West and Sabidussi made sure that the graph theorists Jaroslav Nešetřil (who received his master's degree from him), Pavoll Hell and Vašek Chvátal came to Canada, later followed by Alexander Rosa and Anton Kotzig (1970). His PhD students included Hell, Donald J. Miller, and Denis Higgs .
