Gert quarter
Gert Henning Michael Viertel , also Gert M. Viertel , (born July 12, 1943 in Berlin ; † July 31, 2019 in Sigmaringen ) was a German astroparticle physicist .
Life
Gert M. Viertel studied natural sciences at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University of Bern . In Beat Hahn at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the University of Bern, he received his doctorate. Since 1978 he worked at the ETH Zurich .
He was section head at the Laboratory for High Energy Physics and head of the Technology and Development department. In 1996 he was appointed professor at the ETH Zurich .
As a particle physicist, Viertel worked on the development and construction of detectors for experiments at the basic research centers German Electron Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg and CERN near Geneva as well as for the International Space Station Alpha (ISSA).
