Life

After graduating from high school in Wiesbaden (1958), Gertrud Beck studied at the Pedagogical Institute in Darmstadt / Jugenheim , graduating as an elementary school teacher . In 1964 she passed her second state examination and taught as a teacher until 1966. She then began studying sociology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , which she won in 1970 with her dissertation, Authority or Self-Determination? Graduated from Preschool on Political Socialization . From 1966 to 1970 she was also a pedagogical assistant at the chair for didactics of social studies at the University of Giessen. Here she was also employed as a university advisor from 1971–1972 and was appointed professor at the Institute for Didactics of Social Sciences in 1972. In 1974 she accepted an appointment at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, where she researched and taught at the Institute for Education for Elementary and Primary Schools in the Faculty of Education until her retirement in 2000. After her marriage to Hannes Schlegel (1977), she took the double name Beck-Schlegel. Under this name she founded the martha muchow in 2010 after the death of her husband . Foundation .

Act

Gertrud Beck has a great influence on the discussion about the didactics of general teaching, especially with regard to social learning as an explicit subject in primary school and as part of a democratic basic education. From 1971 to 1995 she was involved in the development of the Hessian general guidelines for general teaching and was in charge of the field of general teaching and social studies . In this context, she published a series of materials that offered teachers opportunities for democratic political education. This aim was also served by the non-fiction and non-fiction book published jointly with Wilfried Soll for teaching in primary schools (Hirschgraben Verlag 1980 to 1985), as well as the revised edition The new non-fiction and non-fiction book for teaching in primary schools (Cornelsen Verlag 1995 to 1998 ). From 1987 to 2002 Gertrud Beck was co-editor of the magazine Die Grundschulzeitschrift (Friedrich Verlag).

A theoretical foundation of the didactic texts took place along two lines. For one thing, she published a number of books and essays on history and problems related to science education. The second strand is based on her dissertation, which dealt with the relationship between authority and self-determination. As a result, the question of the independence of the perspectives and action processes of children when dealing with the world around them becomes the guiding interest in knowledge. These include the long-term study (1989 to 1994) research project on social learning in elementary school and the establishment of martha muchow. Foundation (2010).
