Gertrud Bing

Gertrud Bing (born June 7, 1892 in Hamburg , † July 3, 1964 in London ) was a German art historian , philosopher and director of the institute.

Life

Since 1921/22, after completing her PhD in philosophy at the University of Hamburg with Ernst Cassirer , she worked for Aby Warburg , whose collected works (1932) she had been editing since his death. Bing helped the Warburg Library in 1933 from the grasp of Nazis to escape to London.

In London she helped fellow emigrants. After Fritz Saxl and Henri Frankfort , she became professor and head of the Warburg Institute , which was incorporated into the University of London in 1944 . 1959 retired. A Warburg biography that Bing had planned for decades remained unfinished due to illness.
