History of the Rus

The History of Rus or Little Russia ( Russian Исторія Русовъ, или Малой Россіи ) or History of Rus ( Ukrainian Історія русів ) is a book about the history of the Ukrainians and their state ( Ukraine or Little Russia ) from ancient times to 1769 . The book was written as a political pamphlet at the end of the 18th century by an anonymous author, presumably by the Orthodox Bishop Hryhorij Konyskyj , and was first published in Russian in Moscow in 1846 by Ossyp Bodjanskyj .

The work focuses on two ideas. First, it emphasizes the historical difference and antagonism between Rus (Ukraine) and Moscow ( Russia ). Second, they emphasize the historical continuity of the Rus (Ukrainians) from the medieval times of the Kievan Rus to the Hetmanat .

Despite numerous factual errors and exaggerations, the "History of Rus" had a great influence on Ukrainian historiography and works by important Ukrainian writers such as Nikolai Gogol and Taras Shevchenko, as well as on the formation of the Ukrainian national discourse in the 19th century.
