history

Inscription board

The gender fountain , the name of which can be found in an inscription on the fountain structure and which is also listed as the "Knight Fountain" in the monument lists, was built in the Renaissance style in 1546 and from then on served to supply the people of Oppenheim with drinking water . As was customary in the late Middle Ages (and the early modern period that followed), it was designed as a draw well : the people charged with fetching water had to pull up the lowered and filled scoops accordingly.

Another inscription on the fountain shows the year 1626, which indicates that the fountain was renewed or at least repaired at that time.

The fountain bears the coats of arms of the noble families Dalberg , Frankenstein and Gemmingen , who had their residence in the immediate vicinity at the time the fountain was built.
