Dominique de Courcelles (born June 10, 1953 in Paris ) is a French historian of ideas .

Life

Studies and Research

She attended the École nationale des chartes (National College for Document Research). She became an archivist , palaeographer , and architectural conservator . She was a student of Michel Mollat ​​du Jourdin , Jacques Monfrin and Yves-Marie Bercé . She was a scientific member of the Casa de Velázquez between 1983 and 1986. She was also a student of Albert Hauf and Martí de Riquer . She received her doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (College of Social Science Studies) in 1988. She is also a graduate of theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris (Catholic Institute of Paris).

She is Research Director of the Center national de la recherche scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research). From 1993 to 2000 she was a member of the Spanish Golden Age Research Center, headed by Agustín Redondo. From 2000 to 2015 she was a member of the Center d'études en rhétorique, philosophie et histoire des idées (Study Center for Rhetoric, Philosophy and History of Ideas) at the École normal supérieure de Lyon (Normal University of Lyon), whose director Pierre-François Moreau is. She is a researcher at the École nationale des chartes (National College for Document Research ). From 1988 to 2005 she was a teacher at the Institut de sciences et théologie des religions (Institute for Science and Theology of Religions) at the Catholic University of Paris . Her research works are particularly concerned with Hispanic Studies  : Catalonia , Valencian Country , Balearic Islands (especially Ramon Llull , but also Ausiàs March , Bernat Metge , Joan Martorell , Tirant lo Blanc etc.); Spain during the Renaissance and its golden century ( Teresa of Ávila , John of the Cross , Pedro Mexía , Miguel de Cervantes , etc.); New Spain ( Mexico ) ( Bernal Díaz del Castillo , Bernardino de Sahagún , Antonio de Saavedra y Guzmán , Remedios Varo , etc.). Her publications also deal with authors such as B. Margareta Porete , Hadewijch , Augustinus von Hippo , Nikolaus von Kues , Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim , Paracelsus , Michel de Montaigne , Angélique Arnauld etc.

Her research has two main directions: 1) Mysticism regarding philosophy and literary and artistic creation during the end of the Middle Ages , the first modern age and also in the world today. 2) Interpretation of the four elements in literature , architecture , painting and film production .

Advice on today's issues

Dominique de Courcelles has done some research on contemporary issues and problems. In 2009 she made the film Entre le Feu et l'Eau (Between Fire and Water). This film deals with the four elements teaching and water delivery in the mega city of Mexico. The film was exhibited on June 5, 2009 in New York during United Nations Day for the Environment. It has also been exhibited in all continents (e.g. 2010 at the Shanghai International Exhibition). From 2009 to 2015 she was a member of the advisory board of Ateliers de la Terre (earthworks). This society has not existed since 2015. In January 2014 at the Fondation Singer-Polignac (Singer-Polignac-Stiftung) she was director of the international meeting «Actes pour une économie juste» (Procedure for a just economy). Dominique de Courcelles is examining various doctoral theses on the history of ideas ( philosophy , economics , art , religion ) at the École normal supérieure (Paris) ( Paris normal university) and at the École normal supérieure de Lyon ( Lyon normal university). Since 1994 she has been in charge of the “Cultural Exchange” seminar (six sessions approximately per year).

International significance

Dominique de Courcelles is invited every year to visit universities and research centers abroad. Dominique de Courcelles is a member of the Hispanic American Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Humanities of Mexico. In 2003 she was a teacher at the Marcel Battalion Seminar of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico .
