Jean Greisch

Jean Greisch (born August 27, 1942 in Koerich , Luxembourg ) is a French philosopher and university professor.

biography

Greisch studied theology and philosophy in Luxembourg, Innsbruck and Paris. After his maîtrise in theology, ordination to the priesthood, a Doctorat canonique de philosophy, he received his doctorate in 1985 with a thesis on Martin Heidegger at the Philosophical Faculty of the Institut Catholique de Paris . In 1987 he completed his habilitation at the University of Strasbourg . From 1973 until his retirement he taught at the Institut Catholique de Paris, where he also held a chair in metaphysics and ontology. Since 1987 Greisch has been a member of the research department “Phenomenology et hermeneutique”, Center national de la recherche scientifique . In 2006 and 2007 he held the Hans-Georg Gadamer Chair at Boston College , the Cardinal Mercier Chair at the Université catholique de Louvain and the Chair in Christian Philosophy at Villanova University . From October 2009 to September 2012 Greisch held the Guardini Professorship for Philosophy of Religion and Catholic Weltanschauung at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Scientific work

Greisch's scientific work in the field of philosophy is shaped by his engagement with phenomenology and hermeneutics. Here he mainly dealt with the philosophical work of Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricœur . In addition, he deals with general issues of metaphysics, ontology, religious philosophy and anthropology. Greisch translated works by Martin Heidegger, Wilhelm Schapp , Hans Jonas and Paul Ricoeur.

Jean Greisch is a member of the Institut International de Philosophie and the "Comité Editorial Paul Ricoeur", which administers his literary estate.
