History & club work

The association was founded in 1991 as a society for the restoration, restoration and preservation of culturally and historically valuable buildings. V. founded. Initially, the company was primarily committed to the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace .

In general, the association aims to preserve historically valuable Berlin buildings and to preserve the traditional urban structure of the streets and squares. High-quality modern architecture is affirmed when it joins the existing without dominating it. The association has more than 1000 members according to its own information. The goals of the GHB are represented by exhibitions and lectures, but also by memoranda, petitions, referendums, submissions and other high-publicity campaigns and are met with broad, albeit controversial, media coverage.

The company first appeared with an exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate on the historical development of Pariser Platz and with submissions to the development plan. She then participated intensively and effectively in the discussion about the future of the pleasure garden and was able to achieve a design of the square that was similar to the original. She also campaigned for the central promenade and the traditional candelabra on Unter den Linden . The GHB worked closely with other groups for the reconstruction of the castle and the building academy as well as the recovery of the historic Schinkelplatz.

In the case of the Neues Museum (Berlin) , the company fought against the realization of David Chipperfield's design and advocated a reconstruction analogous to a reconstruction planned at the time of the end of the GDR . The design was implemented without the official approval of UNESCO.

In the recent past, the GHB successfully participated in a parallel case: The planned renovation, called renovation, of the baroque State Opera Unter den Linden into a modern facility similar to a large cinema was repulsed in favor of a monument-compliant design that is now taking place.

In the current work, the Gesellschaft Historisches Berlin deals with the following topics:

  • Ideas and concepts for the development of the Marx-Engels-Forum between the Rotes Rathaus and the Marienkirche as well as between the Spree and the television tower;
  • Suggested solutions for the neglected traffic development planning for Berlin-Mitte.
  • Restoration of the historical Kurfürstenbrücke with the equestrian statue of the Great Elector at the southeast corner of the Berlin Palace, an important part of the palace ensemble.
  • The preservation of the partially questioned listed Gleim tunnel in the north of Berlin as a technical architectural monument in the Mauerpark between Pankow and Wedding under a large railway embankment.
  • Other contradicting building measures on Museum Island : the so-called central entrance building on Kupfergraben and non-stylistic add-on buildings on and in the Pergamon Museum .
  • Further efforts to use the castle as a Humboldt Forum and to rebuild the Bauakademie in the immediate vicinity.

The current chairman (2013) is Gerhard Hoya.
