Society for the Philosophy of Science

The Society for the Philosophy of Science (GWP) is a philosophical specialist society founded in 2011 and based in Hanover . Its statutory purpose is to promote and convey the philosophy of science .

activities

The GWP achieves its goals through the organization of conferences, the commitment to the promotion of young researchers, the commitment to the presence of the philosophy of science in the media, the provision and distribution of information about research and projects of the philosophy of science, the commitment to the freedom of research and teaching as well as promoting national and international contacts between philosophers of science.

The philosophy of science in the narrower sense includes the general and special theory of science. General philosophy of science relates to general questions of the methodology and structure of the sciences, while the philosophy of physics or the philosophy of biology , for example, applies these and other questions to the specialist sciences and also addresses specific complexes of questions for these areas. Further afield include the philosophy of science history of science , ethics of science , sociology of science , philosophy of technology and Empirical science research .

The GWP cooperates with the Journal for General Philosophy of Science . The GWP is a member of the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) founded in 2007 . Further collaborations exist with the Society for Analytical Philosophy (GAP) and the Société de Philosophy des Sciences (SPS).

Board

The GWP board consists of: Gerhard Schurz (chairman), Uljana Feest (second chairman), Alexander Gebharter (treasurer), Thomas Reydon (co-opted) and Christian Feldbacher-Escamilla (co-opted). Previous chairman (2011–2016): Holger Lyre .

Meetings

The GWP plans regular international society meetings every three years. The GWP.2013 from 11. – 14. March 2013 in Hanover under the title “How Much Philosophy in the Philosophy of Science?”. From 8th to 11th In March 2016 the GWP.2016 was held in Düsseldorf under the title Philosophy of Science Between the Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences, and the Humanities, organized locally by the Düsseldorf Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science (DCLPS).
