Society for Contemporary Music Aachen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society for Contemporary Music Aachen e. V. (GZM) is an association of musicians and those interested in music who pursue the goal of providing a forum for current jazz , improvised music and contemporary composed music in Aachen . This includes concerts , lectures, discussion forums, workshops and music educational work in the club's own free music school, music loft .

history

Development phase

At the beginning of 1987 musicians from Aachen held talks with the Free Jazzhaus School in Cologne about the possibilities of a similar free music school for Aachen. The project proposal for the Aachen Jazz School was also discussed with the Department of Culture . In order to integrate the project into a larger context, the Society for Contemporary Music Aachen eV (GZM) was founded in February 1988. The aim of the association was to promote jazz, improvised music and contemporary composed music. This should be done both with concerts and through the establishment of a club's own free music school. The GZM presented itself to the public as the organizer for the first time in November 1988 with the now annual Euregio Music Days. In February 1989, the GZM's music education work began in the Jakobshof with the first semester of the music loft free music school. WDR 3 (television) and the local press reported on music loft's first semester-end concert with 70 participants . Various efforts to find their own premises were initially unsuccessful. Finally, the culture committee decided in December 1991 to take GZM into account when planning the Barockfabrik culture house in Aachen (Löhergraben). Rooms have now been made available for a transition phase. Since, not least, the personnel infrastructure of music loft was improved from 1993 onwards, public interest increased so that the local and national press took notice of the activities to an increasing extent. In addition to the now established 10th Euregio Music Days in October 1997, the GZM organized individual concerts that took place at irregular intervals.

GZM in the Aachen Sound Bridge

Since the cultural policy in 1994 signaled that there could be rooms for the GZM in the traditional Old Kurhaus in the future, the founding meeting of the StattOrchester Aachen took place there on February 5, 1995 on the initiative of the school director of music loft and later GZM manager Lutz Felbick . In a concert and a lecture at the former Aachen place of work of Herbert von Karajan and Peter Raabe, this event highlighted the necessity of permanent promotion of jazz. A usage contract for GZM was only agreed in 1998 for a separate event area within the Old Kurhaus, for which GZM had proposed the name "Sound Bridge". With an opening week organized by the GZM from May 9 to 21, 1998, the GZM's move into the Klangbrücke was sealed. For the 10th anniversary, music loft presented its work in 1999 in special events. In addition to numerous individual concerts, there were nationally recognized events such as For example, the Aachen Messiaen Days in May 2001. Other festivals (e.g. MIDIVISI, Stockhausen Festival), the offers for the 25th anniversary of GZM, workshops and composer portraits also enriched the range of events. At the 25th anniversary concert of music loft on September 21, 2014, the public was presented with the variety of courses on offer, from lessons in instrumental and vocal subjects, basic subjects, supplementary subjects, ensemble subjects and workshops including the musical performances there. Because of its exemplary concept, the GZM has received many awards from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for funding for venues.

structure

With the venue Klangbrücke, GZM has found a permanent venue for the annual In Front Festival, which has been organized by GZM since 1988 (until 1996 as Euregio Musiktage). With numerous other events, the GZM contributes to the diversity of Aachen's musical life. Several rehearsal rooms for the free music school music loft and rooms for the administration are also located in the sound bridge. GZM has had a stable personnel infrastructure since 1993. In 2007 the support association of music loft was founded. Through multiple networking with similar initiatives of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and cooperation with the institutions of public cultural funding, the GZM has meanwhile created a permanent place in the Aachen cultural landscape.
