from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society for Research into the Flora of Germany (GEFD) e. V. is a non-profit scientific professional association based in Berlin .

tasks and goals

The primary goal of the GEFD is to promote floristic and botanical research in Germany. The members are scientifically interested botanists who are interested in regional research as well as nationwide networking. The main focus is on the taxonomy and systematics of vascular plants , with nomenclature , chorological and historical studies being supported. The neglected sub-disciplines of scientific herbarization , karyology and autecology are expressly promoted. There is close cooperation with the botanical associations of the federal states and regions. The association is exclusively and directly committed to charitable purposes.

activities

The main activities of the GEFD are:

  • The publication of scientific publications in their annual magazine Kochia and in the irregularly appearing Kochia supplements. The magazine is named in honor of Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch , an influential German botanist. All manuscripts are subjected to a review system. Volumes that are more than five years old are freely accessible online.
  • Circular letters sent electronically provide regular information on the association's activities.
  • Every year in October / November the GEFD organizes a 2–3-day scientific conference at different locations in Germany, often combined with visits to scientific research institutions such as museums or botanical gardens . The conference includes lectures and herbarium demonstrations and is held in conjunction with the general meeting. In the time between the conferences, the GEFD organizes general excursions and special excursions , with the latter usually focusing on a critical group of plants.
  • As a service for members there is a specialist system for the determination of critical taxa.

Research funding

The GEFD supports private individuals and botanists working at universities in taxonomic and floristic studies through financial grants. A committee has been set up within the GEFD to select projects that are worthy of funding and make recommendations to the board.
