Kelsang Gyatso (New Kadampa Tradition)
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso ( Tibetan བསྐལ་ བཟང་ རྒྱ་ མཚོ Wylie bskal-bzang rgya-mtsho ) (* 1931 in Tibet ) is a scholar of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism , founder of the New Kadampa tradition and author of numerous books on Buddhism .
Life
Geshe Kelsang was born in Tibet in 1931 and ordained a Buddhist monk at the age of eight . He completed his studies first at Jampa Ling Monastery, later at Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, where he passed two exams, and then at the large Sera -je Monastery University in Lhasa .
When he left Tibet in 1959, he spent the next 18 years mainly doing meditation retreats in the foothills of the Himalayas .
In 1973 he took part in a ceremony in Sera-je monastery, during which he was presented with a khata as a sign of his recognition as a Geshe. Since then he has been known publicly as Geshe. In 1977 he took on the request of his spiritual teacher Trijang Rinpoche to an invitation in Lama Thubten Yeshe FPMT -Zentrum Manjushri Institute to teach in Ulverston, England. In 1987 he went on a 3 year retreat in the south of Scotland, during which time he wrote several books.
In 1991 he founded the New Kadampa, Tradition . The New Kadampa Tradition sees itself as a continuation of the Buddhist Kadampa lineage as it comes from Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa . Geshe Kelsang has now written more than 23 contemporary books on Buddhism in English, not all of which have been translated into German. Many of Geshe Kelsang's books are commentaries on Je Tsongkhapa's works. Geshe Kelsang is a "fully realized meditation master" and internationally recognized teacher of Buddhism as a direct result of his own spiritual master Kyabje Trijang Dorjechang or Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang or Trijang Rinpoche (1901–1981) and his teacher Phabongkha Rinpoche Dechen Nyingpo (1878–1941 ).
On the basis of these texts Geshe Kelsang designed the three study programs that are taught at all NKT centers.
He translated prayer texts, adapted the rituals to Western culture and founded Buddhist centers and groups all over the world. Today there are over 1200 in more than 50 countries.
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso became a British citizen in 1982 .
