Gesine Wencke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gesine Wencke , b. Schilling, (born December 7, 1807 in Vegesack , † February 15, 1866 in Bremerhaven ) was a German shipbuilding entrepreneur and shipowner.

biography

Wencke was the daughter of Captain Claus Schilling and his wife Mette Schilling. In 1834 she married the Bremerhaven shipbuilder Friedrich Wilhelm Wencke (1806-1859), who had been running the family shipyard and shipping company on the right bank of the Geeste since 1833 . Both had seven children. The family lived in their town house on the harbor and, since 1854, also in the representative country estate Friedrichs-Ruh in Langen , north of Lehe .

In 1859, after the husband's death, Gesine Wencke and son-in-law Friedrich Wilhelm Albert Rosenthal (1826–1882) ran the company. In 1864 the resolute entrepreneur fell ill and appointed her son-in-law as a partner, who now ran the company alone. After her death, her sons Nicolaus Diedrich (* 1848) and Johannes Bernhard (* 1850) should inherit the company.

A granddaughter of Friedrich Wilhelm and Gesine Wencke was the Worpswede painter Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874–1963).
