The Truncated saxifrage ( Saxifraga retusa ) is a species in the genus saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) in the family of the Saxifragaceae (Saxifragaceae).

features

The trimmed saxifrage is a perennial plant . The leaves are 2 to 4 millimeters long, glossy dark green, opposite and curved backwards. At the front there are 3 to 5 pits that deposit lime. Ciliated is only the lower margin half. The stem reaches heights of growth of 5 to 15 millimeters, is glabrous, upright and has 2 to 4 flowers. The petals are red, egg-shaped, 4 to 5 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide. The sepals are half as long and have no eyelashes. The stamens are longer than the petals and red. The stamens are orange.

Flowering time is from May to August.

The species has chromosome number 2n = 26.

Occurrence

The trimmed saxifrage occurs in the Pyrenees, the western Alps to Ticino and the northern Alps in Styria and near Salzburg, as well as in the Carpathians and in the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria, subalpine to alpine on silicate rocks and rubble as well as in the ridge area at altitudes of 2000 to 3000 meters . The species can be found scattered in the western Alps. It does not occur outside of Europe.

Subspecies

One can distinguish two subspecies in this species:

  • Saxifraga retusa subsp. augustana (Vaccari) P. Fourn. ; occurs only in the western Alps of France and Italy
  • Saxifraga retusa subsp. retusa , occurs in the entire distribution area except in parts of the southwestern Alps.
