The health check-up for the early detection of illnesses (also called health check-up or "Check-up 35") is a preventive medical check-up that has been offered to insured persons by statutory health insurance in Germany since 1989 .

For the first time since the end of 2018, those between the ages of 18 and 34 have a one-time right to a free medical examination. From the age of 35 you are entitled to an examination every three years. In Austria, the "preventive" or "health check-up" has been available to people over the age of 18 free of charge once a year since 1974. The preventive care includes a physical examination , a urine test for blood , protein and glucose excretion as well as the determination of two blood values: the total cholesterol concentration and the glucose concentration .

impact

The general practitioner's health check-up is intended to enable early detection of various diseases such as cancer. This was accompanied by evaluations by the international, independent Cochrane Collaboration on 14 studies since the introduction of the check-up until today. They found that until 2012 it was not noticed whether more lives were saved by the early detection of diseases. The number of deaths was not reduced. After all, 20 percent more diseases were diagnosed.
