The spotted Mormon tulip ( Calochortus superbus ) is a species of the genus Mormon tulips ( Calochortus ) in the lily family (Liliaceae).
features
The spotted Mormon tulip is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 to 60 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The nectar gland is shaped like a narrow crescent moon or an angle. The tepals are 2 to 4 inches long, white, lavender or yellowish in color and have a brown or purple basal spot that is bordered in yellow. The outer tepals are lanceolate, the inner obovate.
The flowering period extends from June to July.
Occurrence
The spotted Mormon tulip occurs in California in dry, open slopes and in yellow pine forests at altitudes from 0 to 1700 meters.
