Carlton Elmer Purdy
Carlton Elmer Purdy (he called himself mostly just "Carl Purdy") (born March 16, 1861 in Dansville , Ingham County , Michigan ; † August 8, 1945 in Ukiah , California ) was an American botanist, plant collector and breeder . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Purdy ".
Live and act
Purdy completed teacher training as a teenager and also worked briefly in the profession. After moving to California with his parents, he founded his own nursery in Ukiah in 1879 at the age of 17 and expanded it into a well-known company in specialist circles over the following decades. He was particularly interested in the lily-like (Liliales) and iridaceae plants of the western USA as well as the genera Sempervivum and Sedum . He researched geophytes well into old age and wrote important scientific articles, including in LH Bailey's "Cyclopedia of American Horticulture". He had a close friendship with the botanist Luther Burbank .

The American botanist Alice Eastwood (1859–1953) named Carl Purdy in honor of the species Brodiaea purdyi , Fritillaria purdyi and Iris purdyi .
