The swift runner ( Trechus ) are one of the most species-rich genera of ground beetles with around 900 species . They are divided into 8 subgenus, with around 90 percent of the species being assigned to the nominate subgenus. Trechus is probably a regression (made-up word) from (Greek) trechein "to run".

distribution

They are mainly found in Europe, Asia and North America, as islands also in Southeast Asia, Australia (there especially in the southern temperate zone), Africa and the surrounding islands of these continents. Most species have relatively small distribution areas ( endemism ) and are therefore of great faunistic interest. There are species that occur only on a single mountain peak or on an island (e.g. T. laevipes on Monte Generoso or T. ochreatus on Zirbitzkogel in Austria). There are around 80 species in the Alps and well over 200 in Europe.

description

A typical characteristic of the genus is a wing seam bent over the wing cover .

They are small, inconspicuous beetles with a hidden way of life. Most nimble-runner species are cold-preferential, moisture-loving ( hygrophile ), flightless mountain dwellers. They can be found in the litter , on the edges of snowfields or stream banks, a few in caves. Few species are found in caves and have stunted or no eyes at all.

Systematics

The genus is divided into the following sub-genres:

  • Atlantotrechus Lompe , 1999
  • Arabotrechus Mateu , 1990
  • Elgonophyes Jeannel , 1954
  • Elgonotrechus Jeannel , 1954
  • Meruitrechus Jeannel , 1960
  • Microtrechus Jeannel , 1927
  • Parepaphius Jeannel , 1962
  • Trechus Clairville , 1806

The species are also grouped into several species groups. More than 92 percent of the species are found in the Palearctic . About 70 species occur in the Nearctic , 3 of which were introduced.
