The Gethsemane Church in Würzburg District Heuchelhof is a parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran deanery of Würzburg . It was built between 1998 and 2001 according to plans by Alexander von Branca . The architect had also planned the Michaelskirche on the Schwanberg in the Kitzingen district .

history

The Heuchelhof is the youngest and largest district of Würzburg. It was created in the 1960s and accordingly it was shaped in its first construction phases by the high-rise construction of that time. While the Catholic parish church of St. Sebastian was consecrated in 1977, the Gethsemane Church planned in 1988 could not be built until 1998-2000 due to financial problems. At that time the Heuchelhof had approx. 4000 apartments and the population had increased to approx. 12,000 residents.

The church is named after the garden of Gethsemane , in which, according to the Gospel tradition ( Mk 14.32–42  LUT ), Jesus Christ prayed on the night before his crucifixion. In 1998 the foundation stone was laid, after two years of construction the inauguration took place on May 14, 2000 by Regional Bishop Bezzel. On May 5, 2013, the new organ was handed over to its destination.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a round building with a pagoda-shaped dome. The dome rests on ten columns and is crowned at the highest point by a glass traffic light. The bell tower, a campanile with five bells, was completed in 2001 and, as a gate tower, also serves as an entrance portal to the churchyard.
