Macroscopic features

The antler-shaped wooden club forms from vegetative mycelium 2–5 (–8) cm high, dark and tough stromata (collective fruit bodies), in whose abdominal parts the actual fruit bodies ( perithecia ) are sunk. Unlike the bark, the flesh of the stroma has a whitish color. Immature stromata are reminiscent of branched deer antlers and are powdered white at the tips with numerous conidiospores . In the spring, the pollination disappears and the belly part swells. The surface appears rough due to the numerous perithecia - through these openings the ascospores finally get outside. The color of the spore powder is black.

Microscopic features

The dark olive-brown spores are elliptical-bean-shaped, smooth and have two lighter oil droplets and a fissure. The dimensions are 11–15.5 × 4.5–6.5 µm.

ecology

The antler-shaped wooden club is a saprobiont inhabitant of hardwood stumps and fallen branches, but it is rarely found on softwood. It can be found in the conidial stage all year round in forests with suitable substrates and is very common. Perithecia are formed in spring and can be found from March to May.

meaning

The antler-shaped wooden club is out of the question as an edible mushroom due to its tough consistency, and the species is not of economic importance as a wood decomposer.
