The wooden clubs ( Xylaria ) are a genus of tubular mushrooms from the subdivision Pezizomycotina .

features

The types of wooden clubs form upright, coarse, club-like or coral-like branched and mostly stalked stromata (collective fruiting bodies), i. H. Fruit body-like formations of the vegetative mycelium, in which the actual fruit bodies, dark-walled perithecia, are sunk. Before the development of the fruiting bodies, the stomata are covered with white conidia spores , which means that immature fruiting bodies are covered with white dust and ripe fruiting bodies are black. The asci contain eight spores, the ascospores are ellipsoidal-spindle-shaped to bean-shaped, black and have a white germinal furrow.

The wooden clubs are saprobionts , most species inhabit wood, some also other plant remains, animal droppings or soil.
