The long-handled maple wooden club ( Xylaria longipes ) is a tubular fungus from the genus of wooden clubs ( Xylaria ).
features
The long-stemmed wooden club forms relatively large stromata (collective fruiting bodies) consisting of vegetative mycelium , in which the actual fruiting bodies ( perithecia ) are sunk in one row. The collective fruit bodies are divided into a sterile, cylindrical stalk, which can be about 1–3 cm long and 2–5 mm thick, as well as a fertile head part, which is club-shaped to cylindrical and a length of 3 to 6 cm with a width can reach from 3 to 8 mm. The handle, smooth at the top and finely felted, gradually merges into the head. The mushrooms are black in color, the head part is fine black due to the sunken perithecia, sometimes cracked open like a fine net. Young fruiting bodies are pollinated gray-brown by the conidia spores . The spores are 13-16 × 5.5-7.5 µm in size.
ecology
The long-handled maple wood club lives mostly saprobion table on dead, barked branches of oak , mountain ash and maple , also on beech and hornbeam . The fruiting bodies appear singly, gregariously or in clusters, they usually grow out of the underside of branches buried in the ground.
meaning
The woody long-handled maple wood club is out of the question as an edible mushroom, it is of no importance as a wood decomposer.
In instrument making, wood from the sycamore maple infested by the long-handled maple wood club is used to obtain a sound that resembles Stradivarius instruments.
Species delimitation
The more common multifarious wooden club is similar . It differs in its somewhat more compact and lumpy shape and the lack of a sterile stem part, which can be recognized in the section by the fact that the perithecia are not only to be found in the head part but in the entire stroma . It can also be distinguished microscopically by the larger spores (22–29 × 7–9 µm).
